Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the option to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
