Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
