Thousands Lost Electricity in Queensland and Victoria Following Severe Storms

Nearly twenty-five thousand residences in south-east Queensland found themselves lacking electricity on the start of the week after severe thunderstorms impacted the area, bringing strong winds topping over 100 km/h.

Substantial Ice Stones and Broad Damage

Residents observed large ice chunks measuring up to 7cm in certain regions. Meteorological experts announced that different parts across the state had been affected by substantial ice precipitation.

Utility workers were focused on reestablishing electricity service throughout the impacted areas, with approximately seventy teams activated to handle the widespread outages.

Victorian Climate Difficulties

Simultaneously, nearly one thousand residents in Victoria also experienced power outages after Melbourne saw its heaviest rainfall in 18 months.

State Emergency Services received nearly 600 calls for help across the state, mostly for property damage but also for fallen timber and flooding.

  • Wyndham region - 179 help reports

At the height on Sunday, in excess of 28k energy customers in the state were experiencing outages.

Climate Outlook

Humid circumstances were forecast to persist along significant areas of the state's eastern regions this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to attract humidity against the coastal areas.

The following day was expected to become the heaviest precipitation period, with persistent thunderstorm potential expected across different parts of both regions.

Medical Alert

Medical authorities alerted that there was an increased chance of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the countryside regions, particularly given the ongoing climate situation.

This alert comes after historical occurrences where comparable situations led to substantial respiratory problems in the state.
