Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
