Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
