At least 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
